What is the story behind the colorful facades of the Handelskade in Willemstad?

Around 1815, Governor Albert Kikkert ordered the houses to be painted in bright colors, as the original white of the facades supposedly dazzled his eyes too much.

In reality, however, he was involved in the only paint factory on the island and thus made a good business. It is thanks to him that Willemstad has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997.

The Handelskade is the waterfront promenade in Punda. The famous, colorful facades of the colonial buildings are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
