What is the story behind the colorful facades of the Handelskade in Willemstad?

Around 1815, Governor Albert Kikkert ordered the houses to be painted in bright colors, as the original white of the facades supposedly dazzled his eyes too much.

In reality, however, he was involved in the only paint factory on the island and thus made a good business. It is thanks to him that Willemstad has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997.

The Handelskade is the waterfront promenade in Punda. The famous, colorful facades of the colonial buildings are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

    The Koningin Emmabrug, Pontjesbrug or Queen Emma Bridge is a floating pontoon bridge made of wood and steel that is over 100 years old. It connects the two districts of Punda and Otrobanda.

    It is just under 10 meters wide and 167 meters long and can be completely moved to the Otrobanda shore side for ships to pass.

    A pharmacy is called Botica or Botika on Curacao.

    Look out for this name on houses and shops and not Farmacia or Pharmacy. The snake from the staff of Aesculapius is often the symbol.

    The boticas are very well stocked on Curacao. You can get many medicines there even without a doctor’s prescription. Boticas are also drugstores and often have products that you know from home, some of which are cheaper than in the supermarkets.
