What is a Toko?

A toko is a grocery store on Curacao.

Tokos are usually somewhat smaller than the large supermarkets such as Centrum, Van den Tweel or Mangusa Hypermarket. They are usually privately run and can be found in almost every locality. Sometimes they are quite inconspicuous, somewhat less inviting from the outside and the checkout area is often barred.

However, you can often get food much cheaper in a toko. Some are open longer in the evenings than the big chains.

A very special toko is the Toko Williwood.

    No see thems is more of a saying than a real name. Friends used to call a species of mosquito on Curacao by this name.

    No see thems are literally invisible because they are not black like mosquitoes, but rather brownish. They are so small and light that you can neither see nor feel them on your skin. Only the small, reddish bumps are visible afterwards 😉

    What is special about Playa Santu Pretu?

    Playa Santu Pretu has black sand.

    Compared to the other beaches on Curacao, the sand here is not snow-white, but dark brown to black. It is somewhat grainy and heats up quite a bit in the sun. It is difficult to walk on barefoot, so if you want to snorkel, park your shoes somewhere near the water or waddle there in fins 😉

    The little-visited reef at Playa Santu Pretu is small but beautiful and inviting for snorkeling.
