The view from up there when crossing the bridge by car is breathtaking and gives you a thrill. Unfortunately, you are not allowed to stop anywhere to take a panoramic photo.

Take care when taking photos from an open car window – it’s extremely windy up there!

    What is the story behind the colorful facades of the Handelskade in Willemstad?

    Answer

    Around 1815, Governor Albert Kikkert ordered the houses to be painted in bright colors, as the original white of the facades supposedly dazzled his eyes too much.

    In reality, however, he was involved in the only paint factory on the island and thus made a good business. It is thanks to him that Willemstad has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997.

    A well-attended neighborhood festival in the streets of Otrobanda.
    Kaya is the name of the street in Papiamentu.

    In the months leading up to the Kaya Kaya Festival, districts are “cleaned up”, visually embellished and new murals are created on house walls. For the festival itself, which is accompanied by music, you buy a ticket including a cup. In the spirit of sustainability, there are no drinks containers anywhere except for these cups. The street festival celebrated its 5th anniversary in 2023.
