The wonderful flora and fauna

In addition to the beaches with turquoise water, you can experience one or two natural spectacles on Curacao that are not available here in Europe. How about loud roaring water shooting up in large fountains behind you? This has selfie and Instagram potential! Or, very quietly, the various cacti that, on the one hand, replace property fences and, on the other hand, are eaten as a local specialty. You have probably never seen so many different ones in real life and especially not in this size.

There are many trees on the fantastic beaches that we don’t know about here in Europe. One only ever grows in one direction, another has given its name to two beaches and the one that smells the best and provides great shade is a fake apple with which you can only have a toxic relationship.

The ultimate early bird program is climbing the highest mountain on the island. Hiking on winding paths in different vegetation is very interesting and the last part is a via ferrata that definitely requires sturdy shoes. But there are also said to have been people who completed the tour in flip flops. Others run up and down the mountain 2-3 times in a row for their workout. Anyways – the view from the summit is worth it!

While cruising across the island, you notice a strange stalking bird on the side of the road that is taking a close look at you. Not an ostrich – these birds live fenced in at Ostrich Farm, but a bird of prey. Running is unusual for a bird of prey, but not so for a wara wara. But we have a lot more curious things to tell you about him.

There are lots of other birds that live on Curacao that we don’t have, such as the sugar thief, which really lives up to its name, or the trupial, which sounds so distinctive. This would be a really cool ringtone for your smartphone.

When it comes to nature, water should not be missing, because water is life. A valuable commodity on Curacao. The low groundwater reserves make seawater desalination necessary, an energy-intensive process. The tap water is also drinking water everywhere on the island.
