Punda Love Hearts

Love locks in the heart of the city

The three Punda Love Hearts full of love locks at Sint Anna Bay

When it comes to love and romance, the Punda Love Hearts at Handelskade are a must for you. The photo hotspot in Punda can be found right next to the floating Queen Emma Bridge: Three large steel lattice hearts, hanging full of love locks.

Infinite love

If you want to seal your love with or for someone, this is the ideal place. Here you can lock that moment in your heart forever. All you need is a lock.

Around Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day, you can buy heart locks to match the occasion. You can usually find them at bric-a-brac stores such as TEDi, KiK or Woolworth. If necessary, Amazon can help, either with or without an engraving order. After all, people all over the world are falling in love, getting engaged and getting married all the time.

We love this tradition!

Engraved upon our hearts

Stefan and I took on a do-it-yourself hobby and home improvement project that turned out to be a bit of a challenge. We needed steady hands like surgeons to engrave our lock. On top of that, we only had one free “shot”: we had only one lock in our luggage, plus a battery-powered Dremel imitation in OVP, which we didn’t know if it would work.

Still quite shaky at first, we carved names and dates on the front and back of our personalized love lock. The sound of the engraving reminded us a bit of a visit to the dentist, but that too passed. Our masterpiece was ready for the big day.

Chaining to Punda Love Hearts

“Lock Your Love on the Punda Love Hearts” (by Carlos Blaaker)

This is what it says on the golden sign in front of the large, central love heart, which also lists the sponsors of the interactive memorial: Freeport (jeweler), Penha (perfumery), Pandora, De Buren (restaurant) and Iguana Café. The Iguana Café is located right next to Love Hearts, where you can enjoy a drink or a meal after the festive event.

The chaining event was an unforgettable moment for both of us, which we captured in sound and vision:

Hearts for eternity

It’s been exactly two years since we attached our love lock to the Punda Love Hearts. Right now, just before Valentine’s Day and in preparation for this post, the love hearts bring back fond memories. And the next time we are in Punda, we will try to find our hearts again in the maze of castles.

With your heart in your hand

The hearts are like an interactive, living monument that is constantly changing due to the number of different love locks from all over the world.

Have you already left a personal love lock in Punda or hung it up somewhere else? Send us a photo of it and we will post it for you here on the blog and on our social media channels if you like.

Happy Valentine’s Day!💖

Test your knowledge: We have prepared several hundred questions about Curacao. Have fun!

  • Quiz Question

What is this black and colorful sculpture that I keep coming across on Curacao?

    Answer

    This sculpture is a Chichi.

It represents the sensual and shapely ideal of female beauty that is prevalent on the island. The Chichis are individually painted by local artists. Each figurine is unique and therefore a one-of-a-kind, wonderful souvenir. There is a Chichi store in Willemstad, where you can watch them being painted live.

If you would like to paint your own personal Chichi, you can do so at Serena’s Art Factory on a Tuesday or Saturday morning from 9am to 12pm. Have fun!

The Chichi figure created by Serena Israel in 2008 can also be admired under water. The diving attraction is located at a depth of approx. 10m.
