Kenepa Grandi – Grote Knip

Top of the pops

The beach Kenepa Grandi, or Grote Knip, is located just behind the little village Lagun in the west of Curacao. A lot of the people we met call this public beach their favorite. It is not only a tourist magnet but it’s just as popular among the locals, especially on the weekend. The bay is a good place to relax and have fun, no matter what time of day.

The Kenepa Grandi is one of the largest beaches on the island and it’s car park is just as big. From there, you’ll only need to take a few steps towards the beach to see the bay in all its splendor. It’s perfect shape makes it look like a painting. The turqouise water sparkles in all shades of blue. Standing in the stone circle in front of the steps, you’ll have a magnificent view over the entire bay. Take a pic!

Steps?

Yes, the beach is located below the car park and accessable by a few steps. Nonetheless, the beach is barrier-free: Disabled people can access the beach through a ramp including a handrail. For people, who don’t like to stick their toes into the sand or for people, who aren’t able to do so: The rear area of the beach is out of concrete and offers some spots in the shade on paved ground. There are plenty wooden parasols, straw-covered palapas and regular parasols.

Swimming Pool

Once you went down the steps, you’ll have easy access to the beach and the ocean – perfect for families and people, who prefer a shallow, sandy entrance. The water is so clear that some people call it a swimming pool or a natural (swimming) pool. The sand on the beach is pure coral sand and the lagoon is a sandbank which means there are no corals and little underwater life. Though the beach is not the ideal beach for snorkeling, there are still a few colorful fish to look at. Colorful fish are widespread around Curacao and there are other beaches where you can see reefs with many fish. When we snorkeled in the lagoon of Kenepa Grandi, we saw most fish on both sides of the lagoon. Especially ,the left side, near to the car park, there are a lot of rocks in the water. These rocks make the left side the more attractive side, if you want to see some fish.

The Grote Knip, like the Dutch call it, has a snack bar and even a few showers, where you can wash off the sand and salt for a little money. Though many visitors come with their own cooling box, a barbecue grill and music. We even saw some locals having a party with a boom box, when we were at the beach.

Probably the largest swimming pool on the island

Crystal Clear

As mentioned before, the water of the beach is incredibly clear. If you don’t like snorkeling, we heard about a clever idea on forums: at this beach you can rent a transparent stand up paddle board (SUP), which allows you to see some fish through the board without having to wear diving goggles and a snorkel. Since there are little to no waves in the lagoon, you don’t need to be a SUP pro. You can just start and try it out. We are looking forward to do so the next time we are there.

A Beach with Thrill!

There is another reason why this beach attracts so many people, especially the youth: Tombstoning! On the left brink of the lagoon are a lot of rocks and a small path that leads you towards a cliff. Only courageous people jump from the ledges at the very front of the cliff.

Now you are probably wondering from what height… I can’t assess this at all, so I asked a friend how high up this natural diving platform is. He said that it’s probably about 5 meters (16,4 feet). For his kids this beach is their absolute favorite beach because of the natural diving platform, he added. As a child he jumped, too, but nowadays he’s only watching.

Which one are you? A cliff diver or a spectator?

View in the direction of the cliff divers' jump from the rocks at the Grote Knip

You can indeed compare the Knip with a real swimming pool. It has a natural diving tower and pool. The beach promises fun, action but also relaxation, as you can decide whether to sunbathe, to SUP-board, to swim or snorkel or to jump from a cliff.

Beach Buddies

The beaches Kenepa Grandi and Kenepa Chiki belong together and are about one kilometer (0.6 miles) apart. They share the name Kenepa because they are both named after the former Kenepa plantation and its Kenepa trees. These trees still exist. You can find them at both beaches where they provide shade and adorn the area. In contrast to other beaches there are only two palm trees at Grote Knip, both in the front row.

Jefferson, who showed us the Kenepa tree at Kleine Knip, told us that both beaches are connected concerning supplies. Additionally, he told us about “pay once, get twice”. This means that if you pay a fee for chairs and parasols at one of the two beaches, you can use your receipt the same day at both beaches. So keep the receipt and visit the Kenepas in one run.

We think the beach offers entertainment for all ages and that it’s definitely a “must see and be” on your trip to Curacao.

Scuba Diving at Kenepa Grandi

There is no diving school directly at the beach, because the nearest reef is located a little further away from the beach. So a base at Kenepa Grandi probably isn’t worthwhile. However, diving at Grote Knip is supposed to be quite attractive. We haven’t dived there ourselves, yet. However, you can read what our diving partner Dive Curacao writes about it and book a dive with them if you are interested.

    What is the Blue Room?

    Answer

The ‘Blue Room’ of Curacao is a cave near the dive site Mushroom Forest on the coast of Santa Cruz. It is located between Boka Hulu and the black beach Playa Santu Pretu.

Sports enthusiasts can reach the cave from land. The entrance is difficult to see from the water: just a slit in the surface of the water. Inside, the round cave is completely bathed in blue light, hence its name Blue Room.

The Blue Room is ideal for snorkeling or for the end of a dive, as it is just under 6 metres deep.
