The top souvenir is changing!
The colorful Curacao license plate featuring the Handelskade is one of the most popular souvenirs. Every few years, Curacao changes the design of its license plates, automatically turning them into very special souvenirs. This year, it’s that time again, and Curacao is getting new license plates!
The current design
proudly displays the Handelskade at the bottom. The bright, colorful facades of Willemstad have been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. You will find these on every car driving on Curacao. There are currently between 90,000 and 100,000 vehicles. It has been the most popular license plate for years. If you are looking for an original, you can often find ancient plates without this design feature, which was introduced in 1996, at the Ronde Market, for example. The current license plates have been around since 2009.

The new design
is, of course, more modern and clearer, but unfortunately not as emotional (in my opinion). It shows the Queen Juliana Bridge (which connects Punda and Otrobanda) in blue (with a hint of turquoise – like the Caribbean Sea) and Mount Christoffel in the background. It also features the island’s marketing slogan, “FEEL IT (FOR) YOURSELF,” and the Curacao logo that has been around for a few years now, with the sun surrounding the “o” in Curacao.

When will the new plates be available?
Originally, they were supposed to be on vehicles already. However, Curacao is an island, so most things are delivered from somewhere else. And the delivery of the new plates is currently delayed. Two containers with plates are on their way. The first delivery is expected to arrive on February 23, the second on March 5.
The new license plates are being introduced after ten years of using the previous series. The project has an estimated cost of 2.4 million guilders (approx. 1.2 million euros).
