Playa Jeremi

Instagram Shooting Point

If you’re looking for a relaxing beach day, you’ll love the large tourist beaches in Curaçao, like Cas Abao and Porto Mari. But there’s more to this island than just those! The west coast is home to numerous natural beaches with their own unique charm. One of those is Playa Jeremi, located behind the fishing village of Lagun. You’ll find it just after leaving Lagun to the west, where you’ll see a signpost on the side of the road. Turn left and in just a few meters, you’ll be at Playa Jeremi.

Hey, Instagrammers and divers, this one’s for you!

Just a little heads-up: the beach might not be the best spot for a day trip with the family. But it’s a great place to take photos! You might see minibuses pulling up to the parking lot with pretty girls posing like models at the top of the rocks and taking photos for their Instagram story. In the blink of an eye, the bus is gone again, and the next one arrives. This time it might be a group of divers who have chosen Playa Jeremi. In any case, it’s really fun to watch the hustle and bustle!

On the safe side

When you arrive at the parking lot, you might notice someone sitting relaxed on a bench in the shade all day. He’s wearing a gray polo shirt with the word “Security” on it. This is because the CTB (=Curacao Tourist Board) also provides a security service at Playa Jeremi, which mainly guards the parking lot and the cars. He’s not a lifeguard! He doesn’t keep an eye on what happens down on the beach.

Look around first and enjoy the view

You can reach Playa Jeremi with its dreamlike turquoise bay via a staircase that leads you from the parking lot down to the beach. Before you go down, go to the very front of the parking lot and marvel at the breathtaking view over the bay below. This is Curacao: blue, turquoise, and impressively beautiful. You won’t be able to get this view out of your head – I promise!

This view is amazing: you will remember this turquoise water!

Let’s go to the beach

Finally, you’ll find yourself at the bottom of the stairs, greeted by a small beach with coarse coral. At the front of the water, where the surf hits, it is Caribbean fine and caresses your feet. The breathtaking view of the gorgeous turquoise bay and the crystal-clear sea make up for the lack of coral sand on the beach. By the time you reach the refreshing water, you’ll have forgotten the somewhat bumpy entry and will be enjoying the Caribbean with its colorful fish. Just a heads-up: make sure you have your snorkeling gear with you and that you’re into it! There’s a really cool variety of sea creatures swimming around on both sides of the bay, right by the rocks.

Shading is a minor matter

You won’t find any palapas or parasols at Playa Jeremi until 2022. It was a purely natural beach. Nowadays, a few umbrellas and a few awnings are put up every morning, and there are a handful of sun loungers that you can hire from Quincy. The typical Caribbean and beautiful palapas (permanently installed umbrellas with palm roofs) are still missing. Will there be any in the future? We stay tuned! So, how long do you plan to stay here without getting sunburnt? Only you can answer that!

The culinary offer

…you will search in vain! Playa Jeremi is and remains a natural beach. There is no kiosk, no toilet, no shower and no diving center. Just bring plenty of water and something to snack on. You can get drinking water from the tap at your accommodation and take it with you in a thermos flask.

Action on the beach

Playa Jeremi is mainly used by locals as a bathing and party beach. So you might be lucky and, like me, experience a private birthday party of the islanders live! The beach is festively decorated and games are played—such as tug-of-war with a tire. Of course, the barbecue is a must. The joint barbecue on the beach is always part of it. The beach is the place where birthdays are celebrated in style! It’s almost like being at home. We in Europe meet in our own garden or at the lake and also have a barbecue and celebrate together.

Conclusion

The small Playa Jeremi near the old fishing village of Lagun might not be the first place you think of for a day trip, but it’s actually quite lovely! It’s not the most convenient spot for a longer stay, but the picturesque setting is definitely worth a visit or at least a short stopover on the way to Westpunt. Whether you’re looking to capture the beauty of the Caribbean for social media and your personal vacation album or to literally dive a little deeper into the beach culture of the people who live on Curaçao, Playa Jeremi is a great place to start!

Diving at Playa Jeremi

We haven’t had the pleasure of diving at Playa Jeremi ourselves, but our partner Dive Curacao has. They have lots of great information about the diving experience on their website. You can find it here: https://www.divecuracao.info/dive/curacao-diving-guide/playa-jeremi. There isn’t a diving center on site, so your options for this bay are “shore diving” and “boat diving.”
