beach near Santa Martha, known locally as \u201cPlaya Lagun,\u201d will be temporarily closed to the public due to construction work related to the building of the new <a class=\"externalLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tui-blue.com\/de\/de\/hotels\/tui-blue-curacao\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TUI Blue Curacao Hotel<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>According to the hotel management, the measure is necessary to prevent safety risks to potential visitors during the ongoing construction work on the site.<\/p>\n<p>The closure comes just before Easter, a time when many residents traditionally head to the island\u2019s beaches to camp and spend the long weekend there. From April 3 to 6, Santa Martha Bay is among the most popular destinations for locals.<\/p>\n<p>Construction and renovation work is currently underway on the grounds and in the surrounding area to prepare for the hotel\u2019s opening (scheduled for July 2026). Construction materials, tools, and heavy equipment are located in several areas near the hotel and the adjacent public beach, making the area unsafe for visitors.<\/p>\n<p>To prevent accidents, it was decided to temporarily close the beach to the public. TUI Blue stated that the closure is purely a safety measure.<\/p>\n<p>The beach is expected to reopen to the public during the summer vacation of 2026. By then, improvements and modernizations to the beach area are also expected to have been completed.<\/p>\n<p>The hotel management has asked the public for their understanding and noted that the construction work is intended to create a safer and more attractive beach area for locals and visitors in the future.<\/p>\n<p>Note: This is <b>not<\/b> the \u201cPlaya Lagun\u201d beach, which is located in the small <b>fishing village of Lagun<\/b>! This concerns the access road to the <b>public beach at Santa Martha Bay<\/b>, which is reached from the town of Soto. Fuik Day is a festival on the water in Fuikbaai. Fuikbaai is a bay in the shape of an elongated fishing net. It is navigated with anything that floats on the water. Fuik Day is a big happening with lots of music, food and drink. What started with a few friends&#8217; boats has now become a well-known event that takes place annually on the first Sunday of the year.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Rules for Fuikdag 2025<\/h3>\n<p>Authorities on Cura\u00e7ao, including the coast guard, police and other regulatory agencies, are conducting strict controls at sea and along coastal areas to ensure a safe and orderly Fuikdag 2025. These measures, aimed at maintaining public order and enforcing government regulations, are part of a coordinated effort to address safety concerns and logistical challenges during the event.<\/p>\n<p>Watercraft participating in the Fuikdag must meet strict safety requirements. All boats must carry sufficient life jackets for the passengers on board, as well as the required safety equipment, including signaling devices and whistles. These are now to be built at the lower end of the beach (wherever that may be exactly). Construction will take around nine weeks. Two of these brown algae species drift without anchoring en masse in the Sargasso Sea and the Gulf of Mexico. Gas-filled bubbles hold the up to one meter long plants at the water surface. When they are held together by different currents in the open sea, they form a valuable habitat.<\/p>\n<p>Countless numbers of marine organisms live in the seaweed: from firmly attached bryozoans and endemic species such as the Sargasso fish to free-swimming <a href=\"https:\/\/relaxedcuracao.com\/en\/beaches\/playa-grandi-piskado\/\">sea turtles<\/a>. Young turtles can hide well in it in the open sea and hunt crabs or gnaw on the Sargassum itself.<\/p>\n<h3>Coastal alarm<\/h3>\n<p>However, if sargassum washes up on the coast, it forms a compact carpet of death, as has unfortunately been the case for years on the Caribbean coasts. Curacao also has to contend with this time and again. This year, a carpet of brown algae reached the north of Curacao as early as mid-April. The bays of Ascencion and Sint Joris are particularly affected.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.curacaoturtles.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"externalLink\">Sea Turtle Conservation Curacao<\/a> (STCC) has already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/SeaTurtleConservationCuracao\/posts\/868838218620239\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"externalLink\">appealed for help<\/a> on social media, as sea turtles are getting stuck in the thick pile of seaweed and are unable to dive down or catch their breath.<\/p>\n<h3>Consequential damage<\/h3>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uniekcuracao.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"externalLink\">Unique Curacao Foundation<\/a> (Stichting Uniek Curacao) reports that the Sargassum, which was previously drifting in Ascension Bay, has now sunk to the bottom. In addition, some of it has accumulated in the shallowest parts of the bay.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;The seaweed lying on the bottom and the sea creatures under the sargassum die when it sinks to the bottom.&#8221; (Unique Curacao Foundation)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The brown algae release hydrogen sulphide, a poisonous gas whose characteristic smell is reminiscent of rotten eggs. The stench even overpowers the salty smell of the sea. The gas can damage plants and animals alike. In humans, it can cause headaches, drowsiness, nausea and asthma, as well as irritating the eyes and respiratory tract.<\/p>\n<p>The sargassum situation is critical and something urgently needs to be done about it. For this reason, the foundation would like to contact the Ministry of Health, Environment and Nature (GMN).
