One of our favorite restaurants on the island is Eetcafe De Buurvrouw (= eatery ‘The Neighbor’). The restaurant itself is an oversized palapa, under which there is an incredibly beautiful atmosphere. We die for the fantastic skewers with Antillan rice. An absolute recommendation!

By its feathery leaves and distinctive southwest orientation.

Divi Divi trees are shaped by the constant northeast trade winds, giving them their iconic, wind-swept look.

The tree’s dense foliage in its asymmetrical crown holds yellow flowers, and its fruits resemble dried bean pods.

In Universal Time Coordinated (UTC) it is UTC-4 for Curacao.

To give you an idea of what this means: In summer time, we in Germany are UTC+2, that is 6 hours ahead of Curacao. In winter time UTC+1 it is 5 hours.

UTC and GMT (Greenwich Mean Time), which you are probably more familiar with, are identical in terms of calculating the time difference, but UTC has replaced GMT. Both refer to the prime meridian, which passes through the London district of Greenwich.

It’s always nice and warm year-round. The temperature hovers around 30 degrees during the day and rarely dips below 25 at night, which means summer days with tropical nights.

We’ve included the monthly average temperatures in a table, which can also be displayed in Fahrenheit using a slider. Simply follow the link.

Curacao has over 35 beaches, including large, small, narrow, wide, snow-white, black, coral, windy, natural, serviced…

With so many to choose from, you’re sure to find your personal favorite beach.

The yellow paper wasp (Polistes versicolor), which is common on Curacao, has the funny-sounding name Maribomba in the local language Papiamentu.

This name has its origins in the Bantu language Kimbundu, in which wasp means “marimbondo”. Once again, the connection between Curacao’s slavery past and the influence of an African language on the creole language Papiamentu becomes clear.

We were told that the sting of a maribomba is quite painful. But so far we have been spared.

It’s easy to remember the size of Curacao in square kilometers, because it’s a repdigit, handy number: The landmass of Curacao is about half the size of Berlin.

At Playa Grandi in the west of Curacao.

Fishermen bring in their catches here and throw their fish waste into the sea. In the mornings and late afternoons, this attracts numerous sea turtles: “Thank you for the fish”. You are guaranteed to see them up close while snorkeling or diving.

Please enjoy these beautiful animals with respect and a little distance.

They will thank you with their calming behavior, great photos and unique experiences that you can take home with you.

Sun, palm trees and the sea can be found on all tropical islands…

But typical for the vegetation and the dry climate on Curacao is the Kadushi cactus. Its arms branch out from a stem, which makes it more aesthetic than other cacti. It is also edible and therefore serves as a source of food (Dushi Kadushi soup). A Kadushi cactus often stands alone on a hill – behind it only the turquoise blue sea, the sky and the sun. This image has burned into our memory so much that we have created our logo from it.

Our logo colors also reflect the colors of the Curacao flag: dark blue and yellow.

Yes, the largest bird in the world, the ostrich.

Some of these flightless ratites, whose original home is Africa, live on Curacao, but not in the wild. You can visit and marvel at them at the Ostrich Farm in the east of Curacao.

If you’re lucky, ostrich chicks will have just hatched.

The Divi Divi is an undemanding tree with feathery leaves that can grow on beaches in the middle of the sand.

Typical for all Divi Divis and therefore a distinguishing feature is that all trees face south-west. This is due to the constant trade winds blowing from the north-east.

The Divi Divi tree is the logo on the tail fins of the island-hopper airline Divi Divi Air. It connects Curacao with the neighboring islands of Aruba and Bonaire.

Fuik means fishing net. Fuik Day is a festival on the water in the Fuikbaai.

Fuikbaai is a bay in the shape of an elongated fishing net. Everything that floats on the water is sailed into it. Fuik Day is a big happening with lots of music, food and drink.

What started with a few boats from friends is now a well-known event that takes place annually on the first Sunday of the year.

Aruba, Curacao, Sint Maarten (= autonomous countries) and the “special communities” of Bonaire, Saba and Sint Eustatius.

It is interesting to note that one island in each of these archipelagos in and under the wind has a different official status (highlighted in bold).

The Spaniards landed in the bay between the two current parts of the city in 1499 on Saint Anna’s name day (= 26th of July). The main neighboring islands are Aruba and Bonaire.

Curacao forms the C of the ABC islands.

Geographically, the islands belong to the Leeward Islands. Geologically, they belong to South America, as they lie on the South American continental shelf. Curacao and Venezuela are only 60 kilometers apart.

Strictly speaking, there is also Klein Curacao and Klein Bonaire. These two secondary islands of the main island of the same name are uninhabited.

Quiz Question
How can I recognize a Divi Divi tree?
