Pastechi, in English “pies” are filled pastries. They are eaten for breakfast or as a snack. Pastechi are either filled with meat, cheese, vegetables or fish.

They are similar to South American empanadas.

In Europe, your shopping costs what it says on the price tag. Everywhere and always – that’s obvious!

In the Caribbean (and many other parts of the world), your shopping costs either the price you have to pay as a tourist (“tourist price”) or the price paid by the locals (“local price“). It is also clear that the locals do not normally earn as much money as you do as a tourist. So they usually get a much lower price that is adjusted to their income.

Dushi means sweet, lovely or delicious in Papiamentu.

Kadushi is a columnar cactus that grows on Curacao and can be eaten. Dushi Kadushi = delicious cactus. The cactus pulp of the Kadushi cactus is added to the Dushi Kadushi soup and refined with all kinds of spicy ingredients.

A great place to try the soup for yourself is the Old Market in Willemstad, where you can try it at Zus di Plaza, for example, as we did. Enjoy your meal!

Both 😉

The bridges connect the districts of Otrobanda and Punda across the strait of St. Anna Bay.

The Queen Emma Bridge is the ancient, wooden pontoon bridge that can be driven completely to the shore side of Otrobanda so that ships can pass. You can only cross the 167 meter length on foot or on a maximum of 2 wheels.

The Queen Juliana Bridge is the main connection between the city districts by car and towers above everything. The steel bridge is painted in the national colors blue and yellow, 56 meters high and 500 meters long.

Glacial, also known as Alcolado Glacial, is a mentholated liquid that the manufacturer describes as ‘air conditioning in a bottle’.

First and foremost, Glacial cools and refreshes. It also relieves pain and helps with colds. It is also effective against itching after mosquito bites. The bottles with the bright green contents and the penguin on them can be bought everywhere on Curacao as a lotion or spray.

Know-it-all tip: There are pigs on these beaches.

At Daaibooi Beach, they tend to hide in the bushes and can be found in the evening or at night.

Porto Mari is home to the two famous pigs Willy and Woody, who also like to pose for photos during the day and are always on the lookout for something edible.

We met a pink and black spotted pig at the Grote Knip.

Bon Pasku!

The ship is towed into the Sint Annabaai strait (between Otrobanda and Punda), to Mathey Wharf. The swinging old lady (= Queen Emma Bridge) has to make way for this. When an ocean liner like this is anchored there, it is always the highest point in the city as soon as you turn your gaze towards St. Anna Bay.

Our highlight was the departure of the “Perla del Mar” at night: Its majestic size, the many lights and, above all, the sounding of the ship’s horn were well worth witnessing live. And of course we didn’t forget to wave 😉

No problem, there is a ferry dock a few meters further on, on De Rouvilleweg opposite the Gouverneur restaurant.

Cute, symmetrical ferry boats (white and blue with an orange roof) take you to the other side. DUSHI is a frequently used word in the local language Papiamentu.

It has a whole range of meanings. Calling someone ‘Dushi’ means that he or she is your ‘darling’, your ‘sweetheart’ or even ‘sexy’. It also means ‘sweet’ and is also used for delicious food or anything nice in life.

We wish you a ‘Dushi’ day!

Sambil is a large shopping mall located west of Willemstad, near Piscadera Bay.

In addition to numerous (brand) stores for all age groups, the shopping mall is also home to the Curacao Seaturtle Conservation Visitor Center, a Carrefour supermarket, a drugstore, a technology and gadget store, a gym, a bowling alley, a cinema and the large Sambil Eats food court with numerous specialties from all over the world.

A snèk is a kiosk, a kind of small supermarket combined with a pub. A snèk is also a meeting place, whether for an after-work beer or a game of dominoes. The latter is a popular pastime for locals.

Tip: You can often still get the essentials to eat or drink at a snèk when the supermarkets on the island have already closed.

The flag has a dark blue background and a yellow stripe in the lower third. The blue symbolizes the sea and the sky, separated by the yellow sun.

In the upper left corner are two white, five-pointed stars. The five points stand for the continents from which the inhabitants of Curacao originate. The larger star represents Curacao and the smaller one the neighboring island of Klein Curacao.

This refers to the colorful, historical colonial houses in the capital Willemstad in the district of Punda, located directly on the waterfront of the Sint Anna Bay.

The bright, colorful facades of the Handelskade are a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997.

It’s over Quiz Question
What is the local price all about?
